Trendy Eyelash Extensions
Eyelash extensions are the new trend! The first thing you should do after getting a set is throw away your mascara, because you probably won’t go back to it. They range from a natural “your lashes but better” look to full on glam. When you go to your first appointment your lash tech will look at your natural lashes and let you know what your options are, and what they recommend. Each lash is applied individually to your individual lashes with a formaldehyde free adhesive. You should expect your first appointment to take anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours depending on the look you want. Once your lashes are all on and beautiful the first 24-48 are crucial as far as aftercare goes. First and foremost you want to avoid getting them wet, so try not to wash your hair, go to the gym, or do any hot yoga the first two days. The reason for that is, that though the adhesive is dry, it is not entirely cured. Heat or extreme humidity can cause the adhesive to reactivate. If the adhesive reactivates you can expect to have some clumping (not pretty).
Once that 48 hours is up you can return to your daily routine, but you will still want to be cautious. You will want to avoid getting any moisture rich product (conditioner, oils, serums, moisturizers, etc) on your lashes, as oils can break down the adhesive and cause premature shedding. You will also want to avoid touching your lashes, and absolutely no pulling. Pulling and excessive touching will cause premature shedding and can cause damage to your natural lashes.
Keeping your lashes clean is one of the most important parts of the aftercare, and an oil- free makeup remover is a must! Built up makeup or or debris in your lashes can harvest bacteria as well as ruin your extensions and potentially your natural lashes.
With proper aftercare you will start to notice 2-3 weeks later that you have some gaps, and need a fill. Everyone is different and everyone’s lash shedding cycle is different so your lash tech will recommend when you should come back in for a fill. You can get a fill as late as 4 weeks, but it is not recommended as you need to have at least 40% of your extensions remaining for it to be considered a fill.
Most importantly have fun with your new lashes! Speaking as someone who currently has lash extensions it is great to wake up in the morning with full beautiful lashes and no mascara under my eyes!
